Bugis Boogie

Bugis is one of my favourite areas in Singapore – great food, great shops and heaps of character. On a recent trip, I came across the Sri Krishnan temple, one of the most beautiful temples (of any denomination) that I have seen in Singapore. Like many Hindu temples, it was a riot of colour, studded with incredibly beautiful and detailed statues.

My next stop was Bugis Street Market, which has a sleazy history but is now a popular hotspot for cheap clothes, manicures and food.

Naturally, I followed the sign towards the food! There was so much to choose from – Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese amongst others. I treated myself to roast duck rice and karaage, both of which did not disappoint.

Full to the brim, I then took a look at the rest of the market’s food offerings, making mental notes along the way of what I want to try next!

Egg tarts. I’ve yet to try both the Portuguese and Asian versions of this sweet treat, but they look incredible – just look at that caramelisation!

The last food store that I came across was definitely my favourite. It sold Kit Kats in a range of flavours – not just the standard milk chocolate that you get in the UK –  which made me desperate to visit Japan and see what other flavours Nestlé have come up with!

The store also sold my favourite Singaporean snack – salted egg yolk crips. Having been born and raised in the UK, I’d never heard of salted egg before moving here, but in the interest of making the most of being in a foodie’s paradise, I tried salted egg crisps within my first few weeks here. I really struggle to describe just how good they are to my friends at home, because I feel like I can’t do them justice. However, given how much I talk about these crisps, I’m sure my friends believe me when I say they are delicious!
